Restaurante “El Pescador”, San Telmo
NOTE: This entry also exists in German (Deutsch), ratings there might differ according to where peole vote.
———————————————————————————————————————–
With all the restaurants being featured in San Telmo lately, let me add my bit:
End of April my father and myself went to have dinner in the restaurant “El Pescador” in this coastal village.
To be frank, it was one of the worst eating experiences I have ever had, the only good thing I can say about this restaurant is probably it´s idyllic view towards a small island from it´s terrace, the rest simply was inacceptable and way overpriced.
After waiting for quite some time to be attended (all the waiters were standing in a corner smoking away happily and could not find the time to distribute the menus) we decided to have fish, Lubina (Sea Bass), and a salad for the two of us. Ordering in itself was not really easy as nobody speaks any English there. But, you accept this as the local touch.
What you cannot accept is the way the fish was prepared and presented: A (rather small, more or less 8 in.) fish came on a large plate, all covered in salad and with some frieds. As you could not prepare the fish that way, we asked the waitress (all waiters are ladies, apparently) to do it for us, upon which she proceeded (with a look on her face that menacingly seemed to say: “Do you really have to waste my time???”) to fetch another plate, scrape the salad off the fish, prepare the fish, and scrape the salad back on… Mission accomplished.
The fish itself was dry and leathery, the salad, well, green salad, nothing else. No oil, no vinegar, no dressing.
In the end, and to make this long story short, we paid for 2 medium beers, the salad and the two fish a total of almost 90 Euros (the “first” bill was lower, but when we realized it had wine on we required “our” bill and were presented with the “correct” one, no excuse for the error or else…), that is the equivalent to 70 pounds Sterling.
As the site owners ask for a breakdown of the rating, here goes
- Food 1
- Presentation 1
- Service 1 (never have seen so many unfriendly waiters in one place)
- Cleanliness 2
- Quality/Price relation 1 (ridiculously expensive)
- Ambiente 4
- Toilets 2
My overall rating thus sums up to 1.5, but I will still only give 1 star: Inacceptable.
One thing I can guarantee, you will never see me at this place again.
(Maybe the site owners can put in the map that I have seen with the other restaurants?)

But let me add some things in their defense: They charge for the view really, so to go there and have an (overprized at 4 Euros) beer still might be worthwile. Also, it is the only place open 360+ days the year here, and in winter, from November til February, you have a spectacular sunset right in front of the terrace and Dragonera. This said, my rating is 1.5 also, and I have heard similar stories before (Lino has stuff to tell as well).
