Restaurant “Las Tablas”, San Telmo

Time to write something about one my favorite restaurants in Sant Elm in the SW of the island:
The full name is “Restaurante Las Tablas de Guipuchy“, and it is located at the heart of this village.
The owners themselves describe it on their business card as follows:
- “The Best of International Cuisine Basque in the Heart of San Telmo” and
- “Feel at home in our cosy dining room or enjoy our terrasse with view at the sea”
This, more or less, sums it up. Add to it excellent, fast and friendly service, a superb quality of ingredients and food in general, reasonable and fair pricing, a sound restaurant design plus a chef singing in the kitchen and you get the idea.
On the other hand, you have to take the description virtually, the “view at the sea” is not the same as “sea view”, actually, you rather get a few glimpses to the right and left of the island “Pantaleu”, but thats about the only downside I can think of and probably the reason why its not always overcrowded.
As far as food is concerned, they present a nice variety of dishes over a relatively small menu, my favories are their Garlic Shrimps and their pork tenderloin “Las Tablas”. They prepare one fresh fish dish every day (ask them), also their salads are well presented and a bit different from what you usually get in San Telmos restaurants. The only dish I personally don´t like so much is their rib eye steak because even done “rare” it sometimes for my taste is not tender enough.
Here my rating broken down:
- Food Quality: 4.5/5
- Dishes and Presentation: 4.5/5
- Service: 4.5/5 (down rated slightly due to language issues)
- Cleanliness: 5/5
- Price/Quality Relation: 5/5
- Ambiente: 4/5
- Toilets: 5/5 (would give a 6 if I could!)
Overall this makes it a 4.7 rating (a “5″ in our star rating system).

In the winter month I would recommend to phone ahead if you want to have dinner as they might close early if no guests are announced.
